    SpamAssassin Rewrite_Header Option Not Available

    Hi:

I'm getting ready to enable SpamAssassin on our email server (shared) and don't see any option to modify message headers to include something like *SPAM*.

The docs at http://resources.hostdime.com/resour...m-assassin.php talk about using the "rewrite_header subject" field to do this, but the "SpamAssassin Configuration" page in my CPanel doesn't show that field.

I assume things have changed from when the Help docs were created, so the question now is how. Does enabling SpamAssassin now also automatically enable a standard email message header modification? Or do I need to do this some other way?

    Thanks,
    AlanS

That behavior changed long ago (relatively speaking). cPanel used to run separate SpamAssassin processes for every account. This allowed a bit more flexibility but it took a toll on the server's CPU. They have changed it so that SpamAssassin runs as a single daemon for all accounts on the server. This means that you cannot directly tell SA to change the subject line (if it is active, though, you will see those headers, but you cannot change them). Further, you can tell SA to automatically delete mail using cPanel's mail filters (directly from SpamAssassin's area in cPanel).

Further, you could create your own cPanel Mail Filter that does certain actions based on the spam score of a message, but that doesn't include modifying the subject line.

To make sure I'm understand correctly, it sounds like the effect of what you're saying is the first possibility I mentioned - that "enabling SpamAssassin now also automatically enable[s] a standard email message header modification".

It also sounds like the second possibility I mentioned of using filters to change the header is no longer how you'd do it (described in this forum message http://forums.hostdime.com/showpost....14&postcount=2 that I found before posting my question).

When you folks get a chance, it'd be nice if you updated the Help document linked to from CPanel's SpamAssassin Configuration page to describe how things work now.

    Thanks much,
    AlanS
